European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
