Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
